Each year Americans throw away an estimated 25% more trash during the holiday season resulting in 25 million tons of garbage which is more than during any other time of the year. That’s a lot of trash. But we’re not here to be Grinches and tell you that Christmas is canceled. Instead, you can think of us as your sustainable Cindy Lou Who, here to share three easy changes you can make to make your holiday gifting a little more planet-friendly.
1. Switch up your wrapping paper
Nearly 25% of waste generated in 2018 was from paper and paperboard, and wrapping paper contributes to a large part of that. According to Earth911, the U.S. produces roughly 4.6 million lbs. of wrapping paper each year, and about half ends up in landfills.
Instead of reaching for generic wrapping paper opt in for something more sustainable (and creative!), like brown paper bags from the grocery store! You can get really creative and decorate the paper however you like (if you need some doodle inspiration, we know a guy). You can even reuse a cardboard box and collage magazine clippings on the top.
Alternatively, you can use a canvas tote (we know you probably have a ton), and tie a sprig of evergreen to the handles for some holiday spirit!
2. IRL Experiences > Another Pair of Socks
It’s estimated that $15 billion are wasted on unwanted gifts each year - and that about 4% of those gifts end up in the trash. If you’re not sure what to get someone, maybe don’t get them anything *cue record scratch*
Opt in for an experiential gift, like a trip, concert or hike. You can even invest in e-gift cards to a local coffee shop or restaurant that the person hasn’t tried yet! (Bonus if they take you along with them 😜).
3. Gifts that keep on giving
Instead of buying a gift that will break or be thrown out in 2 years, try some of these alternatives:
Plastic toys → Wooden toys
- Plastic toys not only have a negative impact on the environment, but they also can be dangerous for kids - they break easier, and may contain harsh chemicals. Wooden toys are much sturdier - so they last longer - are more earth-friendly, and (let’s be real) look much more aesthetically pleasing in a home.
Single use plastic → Reusable options
- It’s estimated about 1.2 million plastic bottles are used per minute - and approximately 91% of plastic isn’t recycled. Using a reusable water bottle could save an average of 156 plastic bottles, making it a sustainable and convenient gift.
- Take your gift a step further by making it a “sustainable gift pack”, equipped with a reusable straw, portable reusable cutlery and a reusable travel mug.
Overnight delivery → Shopping local
- It’s no secret that big shipping companies are busy during the holiday season with online shopping, but this means an increase in greenhouse gas emissions. Instead, try to shop local. This not only helps the environment but supports your community and local economy. You also have the added bonus of gifting something that likely no one else has.
- We’ve even curated local products from our favorite vendors to create Holiday Gift Bundles if you’re really in a pinch! Just order before your next refill day 😃
